Carpet is a soft surface. Hard surface is more versatile and covers hardwood, engineered hardwood, ceramic tile, laminate, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), glue-down vinyl and more. Every product comes at a different price point and has its own installation requirements, which is why the range is wide.

The Per Square Foot Reality

Every flooring project is priced per square foot. Price per square yard used to be common and some quotes still use that unit. Either way, the math works the same. You're still paying one square, which is essentially a ruler by a ruler.

Prices vary. One square can start as low as 99 cents for carpet up to $40 per square foot depending on the material. That wide range is why there isn't a universal answer to how much flooring will cost.
